Description

The Property of a Gentleman

[WHITMAN, WALT]

Corrected Galley Proof of "Autobiographic Note." C. 1889

Unbound sheet (9 7/8 x 15 mm; 251 x 381 mm). Text set in two short columns between ink bearers; short tear professionally mended on verso. Green buckram clamshell-case, morocco gilt lettering-piece.

Galley proof of Whitman's "Autobiographic Note," with two pencil corrections in the author's hand. The text appeared on page 4 of Camden's Compliment to Walt Whitman, May 31, 1889. One of the corrections changes a word; the other transposes two lines of text. This text eventually and indirectly became part of Leaves of Grass two years later when it was collected in Good-Bye My Fancy, 2d Annex to Leaves of Grass,
