8vo (7 7/8 x 5 1/2 in.; 201 x 140 mm). Publisher's tan buckram lettered in brown on spine and upper cover. original green printed dust-jacket with illustration by Cummings; spine somewhat faded, edges starting a flap folds.
First edition, first issue, with "Shit!" present on final line of p. 219. Presentation copy, inscribed by Cummings to Philip Smith, editor of 100 Best-Loved Poems (which included a poem by Cummings), "a gift to Phil Smith from E. E. Cummings. December 1 '39."
The author's first book, detailing his experiences in a prison camp in France during World War I.
