Description

The Property of a Gentleman

EMERSON, RALPH WALDO

English Traits. Boston: Phillips, Samson and Company 1856

8vo. Half-title; minor foxing and toning. Original full brown cloth, covers and spine decoratively ruled in blind, spine gilt lettered, inscribed by Emerson on front free endpaper; corners and foot of spine rubbed, nicks to head of spine. Black watered silk slipcase.

First edition, first printing, presentation copy, inscribed: "J.M. Cheney, Esq, | from the Author"

During two visits to England (one in 1833 and another in 1847), Emerson met with literary giants such as Carlyle, Coleridge, and Wordsworth. It was through these meetings that Emerson came to believe that from laws to literature, all that was American had grown out of English customs and fashions. While he undeniably admired England's achievements, he also encouraged American writers to forge a style wholly their own.
