Active in Dordrecht and Haarlem, Jacob Verhagen was known from contemporary inventories as a painter of fruit still lifes, of which the present painting is a fine example. We are grateful to Dr Fred G. Meijer who endorsed the attribution to Jacob Verhagen when he saw the painting in person in 2020.
