A gusoku [armour]
The helmet signed Myochin Muneyuki
Edo period, 17th - 18th century
the russet iron bowl of zunari form with hammered eyebrows, the fukigaeshi [turnbacks] laced in green braid, the red lacquer shikoro of five tiers with spaced lacing in green braid, crescent moon maedate and dragon amongst flames, the russet iron mempo chased and engraved, the mouth agape, broad horse bristle moustache, red lacquer interior, three-tier yodaregake [throat protector], the yokohagi iron do [cuirass] hinged in two parts with horizontal plates, stenciled Dutch leather, copper-gilt fukurin, laced with kebiki odoshi [close-spaced] in dark blue braid, the sode [shoulder guards] of six tiers, chainmail kote [sleeves], six tassets of three-tiered kusazuri [skirt], the lining of the underskirt decorated in gold brocade with peonies amongst scrolling foliage, the shino suneate [shinguards] similarly decorated, with an armour storage box
