inscriptions

Qur’an, chapter II (al-baqarah), verse 255 and the name: 'Shah Jahan Sahib Qiran’ and the date ‘1041 AH (1731-2 AD)’

A comparable examples is in the al-Sabah collection, Kuwait (Keene 2001, p.32, no.2.4), it is recorded as having the name of Shah Jahan and dated 1047 AH/1637-38 AD, both in gold. Another haldili, bearing the same Qur'anic verse and inscribed: "Shah jahan padshah ibn jahangir padshah ibn akbar padshah" and dated 1041 AH/1631-2 AD, was sold in these rooms, 18 October 2001, lot 150. On the present pendant, Shah Jahan's full title Sahib Qiran-e thani, was shortened, possibly using his name as an invocation. This date falls just after the death of Nur Jahan, Shah Jahan's wife, suggesting jade pendants such as these would have formed part of the healing process in mourning.
