The present manuscript is an important text relating to the geography of Persia and its adjacent areas, and to the administrative and economic affairs of the final period of the Ilkhanid Empire. The author of the text, Hamdullah al-Mustawfi (d.1339), a native of Qazvin, was a Persian poet, historian and geographer. He also held the position of a high-ranking financial accountant in Qazvin. Al-Mustawfi was a close associate of the well-known historian Rashid al-Din Hamadani who inspired him to write his historical works. Al-Mustawfi is known for three major works during his lifetime. The first, Tarikh-i guzida, is a history of the world including the lives of the prophets and the pre-Islamic kings of Iran. The second, Zafarnameh, is a continuation of the Shahnameh of Firdausi, extending the timeline to the Ilkhanid period. The third is the present text, considered to be his most important. The manusript includes a double page map of Persia and its surrounding areas, and a depiction of a globe centred on Mecca.
