Alejandro Otero’s investigative mind was like an algorithmic machine. He would leave a project and later, with the same feverishness, would retreat for a period of rest - during which he would record ideas and rehash theories until the correct moment arrived to realize them materially. This is how the Tablones of 1987 came about; [they were] based upon a series of maquettes Otero created in 1973-74 for an exhibition at Galería Conkright. The geometric composition of these [later] works varied completely, in concept and in spirit, from the maquettes of 1974...They were violent, attractive, and took the form of an accumulation of climbings squares, receiving widespread public acclaim [when exhibited in 1987 at the Galería Oscar Ascanio in Caracas].
