C arol Bove uses industrial materials to create elegant and delicate artworks such as Third Red Sweater Painting. The works from this series speak to the artist’s painterly practice as well as her sculptural sensibility. By portraying undulating patterns, similar to those of a knitted surface, Bove merges a variety of mediums into one. As in many of her other pieces, she constructs a convincing illusion of three dimensionality on a two dimensional surface. This trompe l’oeil work plays with physical proportion, pushing viewers to reflect upon their own scale in relation to the canvas. Third Red Sweater Painting serves as a prime example of Boves’ ability to learn from her range of practices, techniques, and mediums ーfrom painting, to sculpture, to textile.
Throughout her career and the wide range of works she produces, Carol Bove focuses on expanding the capacities of abstract art. She juxtaposes personal experience and popular culture to make works that explore the lyrical significance of usually familiar objects. Her groundbreaking works have been featured in a number of important institutions and events such as MoMA, Palais de Tokyo, the Whitney Biennale and the Venice Biennale. The present work, Third Red Sweater Painting, affirms Carol Bove’s role as one of the most influential contemporary artists of her generation.
