Born in Mecca in 1948, Taha Al Sabban has crystallized his position in the Saudi modern art since the 1980s. Early in his career, he formed a close bond with pioneering artist Abdulhalim Radwi, whose progressive and experimental outlook profoundly shaped Al Sabban’s creative individuality. Radwi included the young artist in one of the first exhibitions at the Jeddah Center of Replica Handbags s, encouraging Al Sabban to pursue further study abroad. Much like his mentor, he trained outside the Kingdom - first in Beirut’s dynamic art scene, then in Rome - before returning home due to personal circumstances. A later move to Britain in 1975 enabled him to reconnect with the arts, taking on a more creative role in television after working for Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Information.

Living in Europe deepened Al Sabban’s awareness of the cultural necessity of the plastic arts and strengthened his fascination with his own heritage. Mecca, his birthplace, and the historic city of Jeddah, where he later lived, are central to his work: their landscapes, rituals, and social lives are infused in the rich compositions and palettes of his paintings. The family’s move to the coast would later nurture his enduring love of the sea, which appears in his canvases through cool, deep palettes and vertical, wave-like forms that evoke feelings of contemplation and nostalgia.

“My work speaks of many things: society, the preservation of our heritage, and the sea. I seek to understand the essence of t.mes and history and their effects upon place; but man is always present in the dramatic balance between the intellectual and the sensual.”
- The Artist quoted in Al-Mansouria, Taha Al Sabban, online

At a t.mes when national identity became a crucial artistic concern, Al Sabban used expressive color and form to preserve local memory - palm groves, open waters, and traditional architecture - while transforming the traditional cityscape into ascending, abstracted rhythms. His modernist approach has been described as both an act of conservation and a homage to the nature and culture of his homeland.

An established figure in the public sphere, Al Sabban has produced major murals in Abha, Jeddah, Riyadh, and Dhahran, chaired the graphic arts division of the Saudi Society for Culture and Arts, and founded Jeddah’s House of Replica Handbags s (1992-1994). Since his first solo shows in the United Kingdom in the 1970s, he has exhibited widely across Europe, the Middle East, India, and at numerous international biennales.
