S ingaporean-British sculptor and printmaker Kim Lim is celebrated for her profound contributions to contemporary sculpture, particularly through her exploration of the interplay between art, nature, and space. Born in 1936 in Singapore and later relocating to the UK, Lim’s artistic journey reflects a unique synthesis of cultural influences and philosophical explorations. Relief Sculpture encapsulates her artistic ethos, showcasing her signature style and engagement with organic forms.

Created in 1995, Relief Sculpture stands as a rare example of Lim's stone carving practice. Unlike her earlier works that prominently featured wood and metal, this piece showcases a mature focus on stone, a medium Lim embraced in the latter part of her career. The relief is notable for its elegant crafting from ivory Portland stone, which speaks to her characteristic sensitivity to materiality. Recently in September 2024 to February 2025, the National Gallery Singapore unveiled Kim Lim's largest museum survey to date, which further cemented her place in the narrative of contemporary art.
