Isle of Raasay Distillery

Co-founded by Scottish entrepreneur Bill Dobbie and whisky blender and qualified botanist Alasdair Day. The Isle of Raasay (Old Norse for roe deer island) lies off the west coast of Scotland, in the Hebrides, only a short 25-minute ferry journey from Sconser on the Isle of Skye.

Roughly the same size and shape as Manhattan, but with only 161 population this corner of the world is known for its breathtaking natural beauty, exaggerated landscapes, impressive geology, and one of Scotland’s most incredibly diverse ecosystems.

With a rich history graced by the celebrated Gaelic poet, Sorley MacLean from Oscaig, the spirited Calum Macleod who single-handedly built his own road over 10 years, stories of illicit stills in secret caves and Bonnie Prince Charlie’s hideaway - Raasay never disappoints.

Rooted in centuries of illicit distilling, the Hebridean Isle of Raasay provides the ingredients for the perfect dram. Illicit distilling is said to have taken place here as recently as 1850, with archaeological evidence of a collapsed still on the island.

From the outset, the Isle of Raasay Distillery was never going to conform to industry norms or what is expected of a distillery –from the fusion of contemporary and traditional cultures, processes and design, to the water source, 5 day fermentation and unique six-part maturation process, this is a distillery pushing boundaries for what flavour in young whisky (for now) can taste like, and how it is produced. It is incredibly rare, if not a first, in the Scotch whisky industry to not use ex-Bourbon casks for the bulk of the maturation, instead maturing their spirit between three different cask types; ex-rye casks, Chinkapin oak casks and ex-Bordeaux red wine casks. The spirit that goes into the casks for maturation is split between being unpeated and heavily peated and married together during the vatting process to create a complex yet balanced single malt, known as The Draam.

Everywhere you look, Raasay are doing things differently, thinking outside of the expected norms. That’s The Raasay Way.

Nestled on the remote Hebridean island of Raasay, the distillery was founded with a vision to create exceptional Scotch whisky that reflects the unique spirit of the island, its rugged beauty, rich history, and tight-knit community. Since opening in 2017, they have embraced innovation, sustainability, and social responsibility as guiding principles in every aspect of our business. They believe that whisky making is about more than just the product. It's about the positive impact they can create for people and place.

They can now bring more visitors to Raasay to experience the distillery with Na Bothain. This new accommodation, partially funded by Highlands & Islands Enterprise, has assisted the installation of a heat recovery system from the distilling process to heat the accommodation units and replace several pieces of diesel machinery with new, electric substitutes. This has resulted in a significant carbon reduction from the operation at Isle of Raasay Distillery.
