By focusing on black and white, I lost the vibrations produced by the contrast between colors. I found an equivalent to this by sweeping a dry brush on the black oil paint, which transformed the linear nature of the Las Saetas, suggesting speed, light and even volume.
Malia is a highly representative and definitive transitional masterpiece in the career of Spanish artist Fernando Zóbel, elegantly blending the core elements of his Saeta and Negra series. In this work, viewers can rarely witness both the precise, drawn-like lines characteristic of Saeta and the blurred, smoky ink lines distinctive of Negra. Here, the lines begin to shift from meticulous fine strokes to softly diffused edges, highlighting the extraordinary historical and aesthetic significance of the convergence between these two distinct creative phases.
In terms of composition, unlike the balanced layouts of his earlier works, Malia adopts a bold, asymMetricas l design with weight concentrated in one corner. Arrow-like lines radiate from the upper left, their intensity gradually diminishing toward the expansive void in the lower left—a subtle homage to the concept of "negative space" in Chinese aesthetics, weaving a harmonious and meticulously calculated rhythm between force and stillness.
True to his belief that excessive color distracts attention, Zóbel created Malia using only black and white. This deliberate restraint directs the viewer's focus entirely onto form, texture, and spatial arrangement, creating rich emotional depth and dynamic movement through extreme contrast and layering. Inspired by Mark Rothko's sense of light, Jackson Pollock's energy, the brushwork of Chinese calligraphy, and the Zen minimalism of Kyoto's Ryoanji Temple rock garden, Zóbel internalized these diverse influences into a unique visual language, allowing philosophical depth and gestural elegance to converge perfectly in Malia.
This work was painted in 1959, a peak period of Zóbel's artistic innovation and market demand, representing one of his most sought-after creative phases. Among the top five works by auction record, four are from this year, and the current record-holder was created in the same month as Malia. The sustained market demand attests to the extraordinary value of his works from this period. This auction piece comes from a private collects ion and is making its debut on the auction market. It is documented in the authoritative publication "Fernando Zóbel: Catalogue Raisonné of Paintings, 1946–1984" by Alfonso de la Torre and Rafael Pérez-Madero.
Zóbel's artistic achievements have continued to gain recognition from internationally renowned museums in recent years, with his works featured in major exhibitions worldwide, including "Zóbel: The Future of the Past," which emphasized his deep connection to Madrid's Museo del Prado. Additionally, the National Gallery Singapore hosted its first retrospective of the influential transcontinental abstract artist, "Fernando Zóbel: Order as Basis," from May 9 to November 30, 2025, further cementing his esteemed status. "Stella Maris" embodies the essence of the artist's style, cultural fusion, and historical significance, making it a milestone work in his creative career.
