T he father of the present owner was an early student of Cheong Soo Pieng in 1957, who exhibited with the Cheong a group show organised by Singapore Art Society in 9 -14 December 1957, titled 'Exhibition for Members' held in the lounge of the Adelphi Hotel. Their Singaporean Chinese mother helped translate for Cheong during his t.mes in Europe. In particular, the couple who were living and working in London at the t.mes helped the artist approach the Redfern Gallery and supported him leading up to this solo exhibition. They returned to Singapore in 1964-65, and Cheong invited them to select a painting as a gift. These paintings have been held and passed down within the family's collects ion since they were first gifted in the 1960s and carry sent.mes ntal significance for Cheong's special relationship with the family.
