To French artist André Brasilier, one of the most important subjects in his career is his beloved wife Chantel. When the artist went to Rome for further studies in 1954, he met Chandel in the garden of the Palazzo Medici Residence in Rome. Since then, she has been Brasilli's continuous source of inspiration. Brasillier once said that he was lucky to meet the incarnation of beauty. Chantal is endlessly changing and always presents a new aspect of beauty. He only had to describe what he saw in front of him. His beloved wife also allows the artist to see through many subtle things in the world. Chantal au bouquet rose is Brasilier's most representative work that combines the artist's classic portraits and still life paintings, masterfully capturing the beauty of Chantal and the rose bouquet. The palette of Chantal au bouquet rose is dominated by simple pink and white: Chantal’s white dress echoes the vase, while the blooming pink roses reflect the background. Brasilier captures the moment of Chantal posing gracefully in front of the flowers with various shades of pink. The artist applies light brushstrokes and translucent colors to the work, rendering the elegant and light charm of watercolour with the oil painting medium. The application of colors recalls that of the Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko, creating a sense of surrealism, rendering a poetic and romantic atmosphere that convey his love for Chantal.

Aside from Western art, the inspiration of Eastern culture and art can also be found in Brasilier’s work. François Cheng, a French-Chinese scholar on Chinese culture, advocates for the Taoist ideology of ‘the lack of desire leads to austerity’, which emphasizes the power of spirituality over physical forms. This concept sheds great inspiration on Brasilier’s artistic style, which does not focus on the realistic representation of his subjects. In the current work, he deliberately simplifies the expression of the figure, instead, he composes the image of Chantal with the simple combination of dark hair, smokey eyebrows and red lips, which emulate a distinct Eastern charm. The background of the work is also rendered in a simplistic manner, which echoes the composition of traditional Chinese paintings.
