M arie Laurencin is an icon of the Paris avant-garde, who created a distinctive style melding elements of Cubism and Fauvism. One of the rarest examples of queer female artists in that era, Laurencin played a significant role in the modernist movements dominated by her male peers. Laurencin’s unique voice and stylistic innovations have garnered increasing recognition in recent years, as art historians and critics reevaluate the contributions of women to modernist movements.

Favouring escapist imagery in soft, pastel hues and delicate, lyrical forms, Laurencin offers a self-sufficient vision of feminine affection and sensibility in her dreamlike representations of only women.

Written at the top right corner, Laurencin dedicated this portrait to Micheline Rosenberg, the daughter of the major art dealer Paul Rosenberg. Paul Rosenberg was a long-term agent of Laurencin and represented modern pioneers such as Picasso and Matisse.

Laurencin’s works are collects ed by major museums, such as MoMA (New York), Musée d'Orsay (Paris), Tate Modern (London) and National Museum of Modern Art (Tokyo). Her work was also exhibited at the 2025 exhibition “City of Others: Asian Artists in Paris, 1920s-1940s” at National Gallery Singapore.
