Hsiao Chin's oeuvre after the 1990s puts a much heavier emphasis on spiritual dialogue, which is inseparable from the ups and downs he experienced in his life: Hsiao Chin's major turning point in his life brought him the realization of the meaning of life and eternity, from which had inspired his classic works series, including The Eternal Garden, Samantha’s Ascension, Beyond the Great Threshold, and Samadhi.
Samadhi- 39 is one of the works that reflect the artist's experience of life, his enlightenment that emerged from the depths of pains and sorrow, and his pursuit of an undisturbed state of serenity. This work adopted a “high heavens and vast lands” compositions, featuring brushstrokes full of geometric elements, symbolizing the great and mystical power of creation. There is a pair of block-like lines soaring from the bottom to the top in the lower right corner of the canvas, symbolizing the elevation of the soul. Bursts of colorful dots adorn the canvas, resembling stars in a cluster when viewed from afar, conveying the immense and mystical power of creation. This piece employs vibrant, radiant shades of crimson to express the new significance of life, a spiritual and emotional transcendence that goes beyond the boundaries of life and death.
Hsiao Chin bid farewell to this world on June 30th this year at the age of 88. Throughout his artistic career, he tirelessly explored the enigmatic depths of the cosmos and the philosophy of life. Since the 1990s, he had gained deep insights into the boundaries between life and death. He once remarked, "(The life) does not disappear, it is just not here." As indicated by the themes of his well-known works, it is conceivable that he has now gone Beyond the Great Threshold and entered the Eternal Garden, progressing towards the Light on the Other Shore within the Samadhi.
The work Samadhi - 39 was previously exhibited at the Hsiao Chin - Infinite Universe"exhibition held by Replica Shoes 's Hong Kong in 2019. Subsequently, in July 2020, it was showcased at a major retrospectiveIn My Beginning Is My End held at the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Centre in Latvia. The exhibition brings together the permanent collects ions of artworks by Hsiao Chin and Mark Rothko, delving into how these two artists engaged in a meaningful dialogue and crossed paths in their thoughts and artistic endeavors during the 1960s.
