Rising crystalline up into the air, Chiharu Shiota’s State of Being (Crystal) (2019) is striking in its geometric form, the strong lines of its black skeletal structure juxtaposed against the artist’s signature web-like, soft interior planes. Known for her adoption of everyday objects in her thread sculptures and installations that explore themes of life, death and memories connected to and locked within these objects, this work is distinct in the artist’s focus on its unique angular form, no object concealed in the midst of its black thread. The work is highly engaging, encouraging the viewer to move around the sculpture to look at it from different vantage points, markedly shifting in appearance when viewed from various angles.
