Employing a variety of tools such as brushes, rollers, stencils and foremost spray guns, Katharina Grosse constantly pushes the boundaries of painting. Today, she is best known for her monumental, site-specific projects which blur the lines between traditional easel painting, sculpture, architecture and installation. Using a spray-gun to paint directly onto architectural interiors and exteriors, Grosse creates immersive works full of bright, exhilarating colours.
Katharina Grosse’s focus lies on producing immersive works full of exhilarating and bright colours, combining contrasting streaks of paint, creating an illusion of depth and a complex surface. Her unique artistic style makes her one of the most significant German female artists, as well as one of the most innovative painters of her generation.
Renowned museum’s such as the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Kusthaus Zurich and MoMA have exhibited her works. Awards won by Grosse include the Oskar Schlemmer Prize (2014); the Fred Thieler Prize for Painting (2003); the Schmidt-Rottluff Scholarship (1993); and the Villa Romana Fellowship, Florence (1992). She currently serves as chairwoman of the board of KUNST-WERKE BERLIN e.V..
"Painting facilitates the synchronicity of acting and thinking in the most amazing way because there's no transmitter between the tools and me. A painting is simply a screen between the producer and the spectator where we can both look at the thought processes residing on the screen from different angles and points in t.mes . It enables me to look at the residue of my thinking."
