“That’s where my work situates itself: it’s less about narratives and more about emotions, akin to life. I also like seeing a component of abstract. Although there’s a tangible figure, it’s a figure that works within an abstract setting。”

ntimately rendered in shades of blue and violet, Showing You The Swan from 2019 is utterly redolent of George Rouy’s intense yet intimate compositions. Standing as one the most exciting emerging figurative painters working today, Rouy expertly navigates the intoxicating tension between suggestion and figuration, imbuing the impossibly intertwined figures of the present work with a hazy sense of familiarity that is at once beguiling and otherworldly. The ecstatic figures of Showing You The Swan are barely contained within the confines of the canvas, their characteristically sculptural limbs entwining to suggest the figure of a swan with their outstretched hands. Humming with a delicate emotional complexity grounded by the love and intimacy expressed between the two figures, Showing You The Swan is a transfixing example of Rouy’s emotionally resonate oeuvre. Dimly lit and vividly poignant, the present work represents a moment of tender intimacy, the artist eloquently capturing a moment of quiet sent.mes
nt between two bodies in repose.
The defined silhouettes of the present work are juxtaposed by a blurry painterly quality which initially appears airbrushed, creating a luminous balance between sharp and fade, flatness and volume. Appearing almost dreamlike, these softly blurred hues are sharpened by the artist’s application and reworking of acrylic paint, a process he finds both inconvenient and satisfying at once; “The marks and the layers of my painting link together while I’m doing them because they’re all different parts of the same journey. When I’m applying paint, I either decide to blur it out or decide to leave it as it is. It’s all about giving and taking, being conscious about what marks you want to put down first” (George Rouy, quoted in Marco Galvan, “In Conversation with George Rouy”, Figure Figure, October 2020, p. 22). Resisting the impulse of becoming too detailed or explanatory, Rouy uses only two brushes when painting, stripping back the stylised notion of figuration to reveal an approach that is more child-like and naive in its emotional fragility. The exaggerated features of Showing You The Swan bask in the glow of the artist’s distinctive colour palette, with tones of blues and violet representing “strength, comfort and sex” (George Rouy, quoted in “The Seductive, Lara Monro, “Ecstatic Bodies of Artist-to-Watch George Rouy”, AnOther Magazine, 26 October 2018).
The two figures of Showing You The Swan evoke a primordial energy and delicate sense of romance, their bodies taking up the whole of the canvas space, contorting and adapting to its confines. The primacy of the scene and the intimacy between the two figures is reinforced by their surroundings, which is abstracted into brushy strokes of muted colour, illuminating the tenderness between the two lovers. These bodies are characteristic of Rouy, who’s visual language is defined by subverted and subsumed anatomies and the densely weighted stares of his figures which seduce and entice, the intricately linked hands of the present work using the body as a means of expressing emotions and provoking feelings in the viewer. The 29-year-old artist, after studying at Camberwell College of Arts and receiving his BFA in 2015, had his first solo show with Almine Rech in Paris in November 2022, with his works having been on view at institutions such as X Museum in Beijing and Foundation Cartier in Paris.
(Marco Galvan,摘自〈In Conversation with George Rouy〉,《Figure Figure》雜誌,2020 年 10 月, 頁 22 )。 (喬治 · 羅伊,摘自〈The Seductive, Lara Monro, “Ecstatic Bodies of Artist-to-Watch George Rouy〉,《AnOther 雜誌》,2018 年 10 月 26 日)
