Born in Copenhagen in 1855, Niels Frederik Schiøttz-Jensen made his name for himself early on with realistic depictions of folk life. He travelled widely through Tunisia and Italy, studied in Paris, and exhibited for many years at the Charlottenborg Exhibition.

Like his Skagen school contemporaries Christian Krohg (1852–1925) and Michael Ancher (1849-1927), Schiøttz-Jensen is best known for his portraits and countryside scenes, painted with a naturalist, almost impressionistic treatment of light.

The present work, showing a young woman seated in a rowing boat at the shore of Lønstrup, captures the artist’s interest in atmosphere and mood. His soft palette lends the scene a dreamlike character, with the water rendered in pale pastel tones glistening below clear light and contrasting shadows.

The same subject appears in another work also painted in 1894, sold at Replica Shoes ’s in 2004, underscoring the significance of this motif in the artist’s oeuvre.
