I put my easel in the hut; a sunbeam penetrates the window, caressing Pollok's shoulders while she is arranging flowers on the table
The Belgian painter Adrien-Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès stands among the foremost European artists to establish a lasting legacy in Bali. Having arrived on the island in 1932, he spent the final decades of his life capturing the richness and grace of Balinese daily life—a body of work that remains central to Southeast Asian art history. The present work is a rare, intimate painting of Le Mayeur's home, his inner sanctum.
The artist had a deep love for his "little paradise" - a traditional Balinese style home on the shores of Sanur Beach, which he had shared with his wife and muse, the Balinese dancer Ni Pollock. Only a handful of interior scenes by the artist exist —making them extremely rare and desirable. The scale of the work allows an intimate glimpse into the artist's private home, known to be decorated with artworks, Balinese antiquities and treasures, and immaculately designed carvings.
The two women are depicted kneeling around a low table, arranging flowers. The pink and red bougunvilla symbolise passion, intense love, and vibrant beauty, while the yellow 'Golden trumpet'' flowers signify hope, joy and vitality. Pictures and works by Le Mayeur hang on the background wall, immersing us into a museum-like setting, giving us a playful use of images within images, artworks within artworks. These are all suffused in a signature ruby-red tone, with golden yellow highlights from light streaming through the windows.
Educated at the Royal Academy of Replica Handbags s in Brussels, Le Mayeur developed a radiant, tactile language that fused Impressionist sensitivity with the ritual and sensual vitality of the Balinese world. The painterly brushwork shown in the present work elevates the viewing experience into something sensory. Arranging flowers is a revisited motif within the interior series as they reflect Le Mayeur's admiration for the dancer Ni Pollock, not only as his muse, but an artist and creative spirit herself.
