Matisse's genius for rendering the human figure in three dimensions is beautifully exemplified by his remarkable bronze Vénus assise. The discoveries he made working in clay often informed his painting, and indeed, in the present work the expressive modeling of the clay and abstracted face foreshadow the brilliant paintings of the 1920s.
