The origins of the Birkin lie in the famous meeting between Jane Birkin and Jean-Louis Dumas on an Air France flight. Traveling with her very young daughter Charlotte, Jane complained to the Hermès director that she couldn't find a bag big enough for her daily life. It was then Dumas decided to create the bag for her. The company offered her the bag in 1985 and asked Jane Birkin for permission to name the model after her.

More than just a bag, the Birkin has evolved from a practical accessory to become a t.mes less cultural icon. Its presence spans the worlds of music, film, television and the arts; it is a red carpet staple, a fashion magazine mainstay, and a coveted piece in the wardrobes of celebrities, artists and stylists alike. While the Birkin’s colourways, leathers, and sizes may vary across continents and individual tastes, The Original Birkin stands apart – above all trends – as the very origin and embodiment of the Birkin legend.

The original Birkin is a prototype offered to Jane, which shows many differences from the model that would be later sold by the maison and become the most famous bag of all t.mes .

Its size:
While the first Birkin bags created by Hermès were in size 40, and then by size 35, the bag presented here is a hybrid of the two sizes. It has the width and height of a Birkin 35 with the depth of a Birkin 40.

Metal Rings (pontet):
The metal rings on this prototype are closed rings (similar to the pontets on the HAC model). Subsequently, the rings on sold models remained open at the bottom until the early 1990s, before being replaced by the open-top rings still present on current models.

The hardware:
This bag also bears witness to the brand's evolving use of materials. It features gilded brass hardware, which were replaced by gold-plated hardware (with a check mark) when the Birkin was first launched. Hermès would also later introduce hardware in rose gold, palladium or ruthenium.

The inner zip:
During the production of this prototype, Hermès still purchased its zippers from the "éclair" company.

In the 1990s, Hermès began a partnership with the riri company, which still manufactures all the zippers for Birkin bags.

Bottom studs:
The bag's feet, or bottom studs, are smaller on this prototype than those eventually used by Hermès to manufacture commercialized Birkin bags.

The shoulder strap:
The Original Birkin features a shoulder strap that was not retained on the commercialized model. A limited edition Birkin with a detachable shoulder strap was produced in the 1990s, but the Original Birkin is the only one with a non-removable shoulder strap.

The Original Birkin, inseparable from Jane Birkin, became her favorite accessory, which she carried in her arms and brought with her to all circumstances. The condition of the Original Birkin reflects the many years of use by Jane Birkin (the bag is presented in the exact condition in which it was last used by Jane). It is branded with her initials J.B., and inside you can still find the nail clipper that Jane kept hanging from the bag's strap. Her bag served as a symbol for all the causes she defended. The Original Birkin even bears the marks of the stickers she stuck to it, in support of Médecins du Monde and Unicef. When asked about her Birkin, she used to specify whether it was the Original or not. Hermès will donate 5 Birkin bags to Jane Birkin.

A l'origine du Birkin, il y a la fameuse rencontre de Jane Birkin et Jean-Louis Dumas dans un vol Air France. Alors en voyage avec la très jeune Charlotte, Jane se plaint auprès du directeur d'Hermès de l'impossibilité de trouver un sac assez grand et pratique pour son quotidien. Dumas décide alors de créer pour elle ce sac. La maison lui offre le sac en 1985, et demande à Jane Birkin l'autorisation de donner son nom à ce nouveau modèle.

Bien plus qu’un simple sac, le Birkin est passé du statut d’accessoire pratique à celui d’une icône culturelle intemporelle. On le retrouve dans la musique, le cinéma, la télévision et les beaux-arts ; il est incontournable sur les tapis rouges et, dans les magazines de mode, il figure parmi les pièces les plus convoitées des célébrités, stylistes et artistes. Si les coloris, cuirs et dimensions du Birkin peuvent varier selon les goûts et les régions, le Premier Birkin se distingue quant à lui, au-delà des tendances, comme l'origine même et l'incarnation de la légende Birkin.

Le Premier Birkin est un prototype offert à Jane, qui présente de nombreuses différences avec le modèle qui sera commercialisé par la maison et deviendra le sac le plus célèbre de tous les temps.

Sa taille:
Si les premiers Birkin créés par Hermès sont en taille 40, très vite rejoints par la taille 35, le sac présenté ici est un hybride de ces deux tailles. Il présente la largeur et la hauteur d'un Birkin 35 mais la profondeur d'un Birkin 40.

Les pontets:
Les pontets de ce prototype sont des anneaux fermés (proche des pontets du modèle HAC). Par la suite les pontets des modèles commercialisés seront ouverts par le bas jusqu'au début des années 1990. avant d'être remplacés par les pontets ouverts par le haut, encore présents sur les modèles actuels.

La Garniture:
Ce sac est aussi un témoin de l'évolution dans l'emploi des matériaux par la marque. Il présente des garnitures en laiton doré. qui seront remplacées dès le début de la commercialisation du Birkin par des garnitures en plaqué or (présentant un poinçon carré). Hermès introduira également par la suite des garnitures en plaqué or rose. en palladium ou bien encore en ruthénium.

Le zip intérieur:
Lors de la production de ce prototype, Hermès se fournit encore auprès de la société « éclair » pour ses fermetures. Au cours des années 1990. Hermès ent.mes ra un partenariat avec la société riri qui fabrique encore aujourd'hui tous les zip des sacs Birkin.

Les clous de fonds:
Les pieds du sac, ou clous de fonds sont plus petits sur ce prototype que ceux finalement utilisés par Hermès pour la fabrication des Birkin commercialisés.

La bandoulière:
Le Premier Birkin présente une bandoulière qui ne sera pas retenue sur le modèle commercialisé. II y a eu dans les années 1990. une édition limitée du Birkin avec une bandoulière détachable, mais le Birkin original est le seul à posséder une bandoulière non amovible.

Le Premier Birkin, indissociable de Jane Birkin, devient son accessoire favori, qu'elle porte dans les bras et qui l'accompagne en toutes circonstances. L'état du Premier Birkin reflète les années d'utilisation par Jane Birkin (le sac est présenté dans l'exact condition d'utilisation par Jane Birkin). Il est marqué de ses initiales J.B. et on peut encore y trouver à l'intérieur le coupe-ongle que Jane gardait accroché au sanglon du sac. Son sac lui sert de porte étendard pour toutes les causes qu'elle défend. Le Premier Birkin porte les traces des autocollants qu'elle y avait apposés, en soutien à Médecins du Monde et l'Unicef. Hermès offrira 5 sacs Birkin à Jane Birkin. Elle avait l'habitude de préciser lorsqu'on l'interrogeait sur son Birkin s'il s'agissait de l'Original ou non.
