Renowned for her diverse oeuvre of installations, sculptures, photographs and paintings, Christine Ay Tjoe’s Liquid Talk with Me Again (2007) powerfully integrates a disparate range of media to create a canvas work that is both unsettling yet undeniably enthralling. First modelling her figures and objects by hand before arranging them in a mise-en-scène, Ay Tjoe then photographs the scene, printing the image onto canvas. The artist adds her signature painterly marks loaded with a palpable kinetic energy onto the canvas, building up the texture with the visceral brushstrokes that her works are best known for. Ay Tjoe explores universal themes of the human condition, including greed, desire and power, evoking powerful emotions and probings psychological fears in her work. In the present work, three monstrous creatures appear to gain sustenance, or perhaps lose it, to IV drips that hang above them, each seemingly alone in their experience. Such a work evokes notions of loneliness, as well as nourishment and the experience of living, in a richly coloured digital print and acrylic on canvas.
