Although not much is recorded on the firm of Bouchon in Paris, this pair of torchères in an impressive example of their skills and the quality of their production much in line with the luxurious tastes of the late 19th century in Paris. The figure of Fame seems to be directly inspired from Cherubino Alberti (Zaccaria Mattia)'s engraving of a winged figure of Fame standing facing left and sounding a trumpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (inv. no. 51.501.646).
