celandic visual artist Baldur Helgason is known for his cartoonish paintings with an undertone of dark humour. Greatly influenced by comics and cartoons from his childhood, his training and imagination display traits of illustrative realism, a style previously explored by the Chicago art group Hairy Who. His oeuvre often features one-of-kind exaggerated characters, the majority of them being self-portraits, along with classical art references, which he regards as a way to communicate with old masters. The artist's works combine drollery and sardonicism, subtly commenting on the modern lifestyle and creating a surreal space with extensive freedom for viewers to contemplate issues his artworks might remind of them.
Man Interrupted By An Ostrich in the Pink Room dates from Helgason's early career before his protagonists take up his trademark googly faces. The composition exudes boredom and confinement as the gentleman sits in a tight pink-walled space; however, the absurdity of a suited man interrupted by an upside-down ostrich poking through the ceiling adds a touch of surrealistic whim to the viewing experience.
