“I aim to visualize all those encounters with many “nows”, from past to present, through the filter of my mind by projecting the phenomenon itself onto my works. Through art, I continue to question the subtleties of existence.”
M onumental in size, depicting one of the greatest legends and most influential cultural forces in the Twentieth Century, King of Rock is exemplary of Yukimasa Ida’s extraordinarily accomplished oeuvre. Born in 1990, the young Japanese artist’s powerful vibrant canvases are characterized by rich color, consummate chiaroscuro and lush impasto, and encompass stunning portraits, whimsical still lifes and dreamy film stills. Ida’s evocative paintings communicate the simultaneous beauty and cruelty of transience and the passing of t.mes , capturing a unique poignant intensity of fleeting moments. The artist has spoken of his technique and philosophy as being inspired by the Japanese concept of “Ichi-Go Ichi-e” (once in a lifet.mes ), which relates to his personal experiences of transitory encounters with strangers in foreign lands, the universal cycles of nature, and the passing of loved ones and friends. The artist also extends the concept of Ichi-Go Ichi-e to the impact of his art hundreds and thousands of years later in a world without his own presence, imagining how his paintings might influence a future stranger. Bringing to life the t.mes less legend of Elvis Presley, whose music and presence continues to inspire and the world today, Ida’s King of Rock pays tribute to the larger-than-life cultural icon while cutting to the very core of Ida’s artistic philosophy. In 2017, Ida came to prominence within the international art world as the youngest artist to participate in Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation Gala auction; and in 2019, he was honored as Forbes’ “30 Under 30 Japan”. Ida lives and works in Tokyo, and has held solo exhibitions in Tokyo and London.
