Jérôme Bonaparte (1784-1860) is the youngest brother of Napoléon I. After his service in the French Navy, he left for the United States where he married the daughter of a rich merchant of Baltimore, Elizabeth Patterson. As he wished to return to his native country, his marriage was annulled on the grounds of an imperial decree. Jérôme Bonaparte first tried to escape from his brother’s orders, but he soon accepted the divorce. On the 22nd of August 1807 he married Catherina of Württemberg, daughter of Frederic I, King of Württemberg. This union allowed the newly appointed King of Westphalia to further establish his authority of the northwestern German territories.

Après avoir servi dans la marine française, il partit pour les Etats-Unis où il épousa Elizabeth Patterson, fille d’un riche marchand de Baltimore. Lorsqu’il souhaita retourner dans son pays natal, il vit son mariage annulé par décret impérial. S’il essaya tout d’abord de se soustraire aux ordres de son frère, Jérôme Bonaparte accepta finalement le divorce. Le 22 août 1807, Jérôme Bonaparte épousa Catherine de Württemberg, fille de Frédéric Ier, roi du Württemberg. Ce mariage permit au nouvellement nommé roi de Westphalie d’asseoir son autorité sur les territoires du Nord-Ouest de l'Allemagne.
