The search for innovation and breakthroughs has been the driving force in Georges Mathieu’s art since the 1940s. In the 1960s and 1970s, Mathieu’s avant-garde and innovative artistic process gradually became the mainstream aesthetics; the French lyrical abstraction movement, which was spearheaded by Mathieu, became a powerful trend across the world. Even so, Mathieu never stopped looking for breakthroughs; he began a period of artistic creation full of explosive energy, later known as the Barbaric Period. Mensonges Promis (Lot 1027) was created during the mature phase of this period, testifying to the artist’s passionate creativity. This work adopts the classic radioactive composition of Mathieu’s Barbaric Period, filling the canvas with explosive dynamics. The overlapping red, blue and brown blocks accentuate the golden lights that shine from the center.
The earliest source of the current lot is the Galerie Protée from Paris. Established in the 1960s, it was dedicated to promoting post-war abstraction in France, especially artists from the Lyrical Abstraction movement. Galerie Protée held exhibitions for great abstract masters such as Goerges Mathieu, Zao Wou-Ki, Pierre Soulages and Hans Hartung, creating a long-lasting effect on the development of French abstraction art.
