“The Visitor exhibition was an incredibly interesting and transforming exhibition for me. My brief was to include a group of 18-30 year olds in the exhibition in some way. The aim was to give encouragement and support to this group of young people at a stage in their lives when they needed some direction. I proposed an installation, an 80 metre wall painting of a disco, because for me the dance floor is a totally communal space, where people are free to express themselves in any way they choose, united by music. It seemed like the perfect image for this project. Once completed, the space became a stage for concerts, readings, workshops and other activities. A modern dance group made a performance responding to the environment, and local DJ’s hosted dance parties. I also painted an image on a large disused billboard in the city and we set up a letterbox for visitors to post comments about my paintings. After two months we received over 3,000 letters to which I replied, sending each person a drawing on a postcard. This archive became an unedited and anonymous survey of what people think of my work.”
