ith its evocative palette of crimson, cerulean, ochre and brown, Christine Ay Tjoe’s Lights for the Layer from 2011 is an exceptional embodiment of the rich surface textures and impassioned brushwork that define the artist's most celebrated works from this period. Executed on an expansive scale, the present work represents an early example of Ay Tjoe’s transition beginning in 2011 towards a more expressive and abstract body of work. Through a seemingly endless tapestry of superimposed and transitory fields of colour and form, the mesmerising ebullience of Lights for the Layer is a seminal example of Ay Tjoe’s inspired visual lyricism and extraordinary abstract lexicon. Painted before she gave birth to her first child, there is a strong sense of joy, exuberance and celebration found in the present work, embodying the emotion and intellectual force that has seen Ay Tjoe become one of the most acclaimed abstract painters working today. A work of fierce intensity and passion, the present work embodies the joyful and delirious energy of expressive freedom. Red dominates the canvas, exuberant and full of spirit, a torrent of intensity pulsing from the the central cluster of the composition and stretching far beyond the confines of the canvas. Fresh to auction, this work rivals some of the best paintings that she has created so far, incorporating a controlled but passionate energy.

Whilst Ay Tjoe had begun to experiment with expressive colour field painting in 2010, it wasn’t until 2011 that the artist had developed the kind of refined and assertive compositions seen in the present work. Conveying an emotive and psychological intensity through the layered application of pigment and sumptuously gathered gestures, Ay Tjoe series of Layered compositions carry an immediate and spontaneous dynamism. With her skillful use of colour and space, rooted in her training in print-making, Ay Tjoe’s composition is formed through the accumulated “layers” or sections of pigment atop a creamy, off-white surface. The “layers”, a recurring motif in Ay Tjoe’s oeuvre, convey the elaborate and entangled nature of the artist’s internal dialogue, unraveling before the viewer. The artist explains: “Layers are like a container to keep all things that can be asserted to the unknown future” (Ay Tjoe, quoted in Taba Sanchabakhtiar, “Artistic Process of Composition: Ay Tjoe Christine Interview with Taba Sanchabakhtiar”, Wendt Gallery youtubes , 2010, online). Each “layer” is an amalgamation of different organic shapes, frenzied lines and varying shades of intensity found in her application of pigment. In the present work, red, blue and earthy brown forms congregate towards a frenzied and vital point of red, carnal intensity at the centre of the canvas.

Despite the continuous evolution of her subject matter, one element of Ay Tjoe’s work has always remained constant: the primacy of the line. Though the gestural style of American abstract expressionists – artists such as Cy Twombly, Joan Mitchell—might have influenced her abstract painterly idiom, Ay Tjoe insists that the basic principle in her art is always drawing. Indeed her lines dance with intuition and vitality, allowing each streak to inhabit a spontaneous, feverish affection. The almost primordial chaos of her works are always paired with moments of tranquility, allowing them to become cohesive pieces, much like the best musical symphonies. For Ay Tjoe, the technique of layering soft washes of paint and bold, expressive lines and texture left by bars of oil paint allows the artist to achieve a scribed, sketch-like effect. Delicate washes of pigment like stained-glass are punctuated by energetic scrawls and scribbles, with Ay Tjoe manipulated oil paint like a draughtsman;
“It doesn’t matter what the medium is, as long as the process is drawing. I will always treat every medium as paper and pencil.”
Suspended upon the canvas, shades of red, blue, yellow and brown take on a sculpture, tactile three-dimensionality. Ay Tjoe’s exploration of depth finds patches of faded tangerine and watery blue, resembling the the lightness of an ink wash, softening the harsh intensity of red marks at the compositions centre. These patches can be understood as the ripples in water, the contemplative aftershock of an outburst of emotion. The red epicenter of the painting is seemingly impenetrable, but it is in other moments of calm respite that we may begin to process and unravel the strands in Ay Tjoe’s creative process and thinking. As viewers, it is as if we are watching an unfurling force of nature from a distance, the present work recalls the compelling forces of a rising sun, or the magnetising tides of the ocean. A meditation on creation and creativity at a pivotal moment in both the artist’s life and career, Lights for the Layer captures elegant, lyrical spirit at the heart of her most celebrated work.
