Born in 1916 in Minya, Egypt, Abdel Badie Abdel Hay grew up in modest circumstances; with his family unable to finance his artistic education, Abdel Hay worked as a cook and later for leading feminist and arts patron Hoda Sharawi. His early aptitude for sculpture, however, was unmistakable, and recognising this, Sharawi facilitated his entry into Egypt’s elite artistic circles. Abdel Hay went on to be awarded multiple prizes in the Mokhtar Sculpture Competition (1944, 1945, and 1948), accolades that enabled him to pursue formal training at the Faculty of Replica Handbags s and later a residency at the Studio of Replica Handbags s in Luxor, where he worked for several years.

Mahmoud Mokhtar, Nahdat Misr (Egypt’s Reawakening), 1920-1928, Cairo

Over the course of his career, Abdel Hay mastered the expressive potential of hard stone, developing a shrewd ability to animate unyielding, raw material with a profound sense of movement and feeling. Working primarily in granite, basalt, quartz, and other hard stones, his sculpture remained fundamentally figurative, turning to daily social realities in Egypt as central themes under enduring British occupation. Much like the oeuvre of pioneering sculptor Mahmoud Mokhtar (1891 - 1934), whose discerning eye and technical refinement the younger artist shares, Abdel Hay was particularly attentive to depictions of women, villagers, and children, capturing iconic and expressive moments from everyday life. Desert evokes parallels between Mokhtar’s recurring revolutionary emblem of the fellaha; poised with a commanding presence, the female figure remains imbued with a certain elegance and sensitivity, as she draws her veil closer around her body in a somewhat protective gesture. Abdel Hay eternalises the ordinary citizen in an act of commemoration and empowerment, testifying to the dignity and resilience of the Egyptian people.

Abdel Hay’s national acclaim is reflected in his receipt of the State Prize of Support (1972) and the Order of Sciences and Arts (1982). Internationally, his work has been exhibited across Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, France, Holland, Italy, Sudan, and Syria. Abdel Hay is exceptionally rare at auction, with only three works ever appearing on the market. His debut at Replica Shoes ’s in 2022 - Mobaghata (Attack) (1972) - achieved $140,000 USD, and is now housed in the esteemed collects ion of the Barjeel Art Foundation, Sharjah. Instinctive yet disciplined, deeply rooted in his social milieu yet capable of universal expression, Abdel Hay’s distinctive oeuvre marks him as a pivotal figure in the course of twentieth-century Egyptian art.
