ichael Kagan's Everest demonstrates the artist's praxis of portraying sublime scenes and pictorial icons to convey the concept of human defiance. The work is featured in his 2017 solo exhibition, Michael Kagan: Death Zone in New York. Kagan uses thick paint and bold brushstrokes to create a textured surface resembling the mountainous landscape of Mount Everest, resulting in snapshot-like works based upon photography. Everest's high-contrast and striking depiction of the mountain peak fills up the canvas and leaves little background, exuding a sense of instantaneous documentation of the spectacular. Never taking off applied pigment, Kagan leaves every brush mark on the canvas to capture the exact moments in his creative process. Without too much narrative in its composition, Kagan's confident and deliberate piece is tense, forward and instant, echoing his artistic convictions while evoking the viewer to experience the power and rush of defiance.
