David Gale was the Spencers’ gardener at Burghclere, where the artist painted his magnum opus in the Sandham Memorial Chapel. It had been constructed for him by his patrons, Mary and Louis Behrend, who - in a nearby field - also built a cottage for the artist’s family. Spencer’s wife, the artist Hilda Carline, had been a Land Girl during the War and she created a productive garden at the cottage, which she re-named Chapel View.

The date on the drawing was most probably done by Spencer, but added at a later date hence the question mark.
