A s the largest work by Peter MacDonald to ever be offered at auction, Peter’s Opening (2020) presents a pulsating, electrifying vision of joy and exuberance, perfectly encapsulating the artist’s unique graphic language. Depicting in all its chaotic effervescence a gallery opening of his own works, Peter’s Opening captures in sumptuous colour the dynamics of modern life. Cleverly portraying, through clouds of vibrant colour, the connections between people and their surrounding as they drink cocktails and celebrate the artist’s work, McDonald offers a striking vignetter of the actual and psychological spaces of the spirited gallery scene. McDonald’s trademark giant balloon heads – enlarged, irregularly-shaped and translucent multi-coloured heads that represent each character’s inner zone of dreams, ideas, concerns and desires – overlap and intermingle, suggested at the connectedness between people and their environment. These luminous, psychedelically charged manifestations resonate rhythmically and chromatically with the various balloons in the composition’s background, relating each individual and every piece of artwork to one another.

Born in 1973 in Tokyo, McDonald studied at Central Saint Martins and the Royal Academy Schools and lives and works between Tokyo and London. In 2008, McDonald was awarded the John Moores Painting Prize for his work Fontana, which featured the artist Lucio Fontana – depicted with a balloon head – slashing an egg-shaped canvas; in 2011-12, he completed a year-long residency at the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Japan; and in 2017, he was awarded a fellowship at the British School in Rome.
