I nspired by 20th century modernism and Cycladic art, Lobo worked primarily in his home country of Spain and the century’s artistic hub, Paris. Well-known for his stylized female figures, the present work combines curvilinear forms with Cubist influences. His pared down renderings of the body emphasize the sumptuousness of bodily movement. This organic, pointed style can be seen in contemporary Jean Arp’s work as well (see fig. 1).

Along with contemporaries Alexander Calder and Fernand Léger, Lobo contributed artwork, namely his 1954 bronze sculpture Maternidad, to the UNESCO World Heritage Site at Ciudad Universitaria de Caracas. This work, though monumental in scale, demonstrates the artist’s figural logic that predated the creation of the present work.
