In this episode of A Life Less Ordinary, find out what the year 3019 is like for New York-based artist Daniel Arsham. One of America’s most exciting contemporary artists, Arsham incorporates a near-scientific approach to art in order to transform ordinary objects – cameras, cassette tapes, mobile phones – into archaeological discoveries from a future, dystopian world. In this studio visit, he tracks his development from early forays in photography and painting, to a formative collaboration with Merce Cunningham, through his work today. With his collaborative design practice Snarkitecture, Arsham creates art and architecture installations across the globe and his collaboration with renowned luggage brand Rimowa sold for more than three t.mes

When Abstract Expressionism exploded onto the scene in the early 1940s, it began a new era that would effectively transition the center of the art world away from Paris, where it had been thriving for decades since the Salons and later the Impressionists in the 1870s–1880s, and relocate it to New York. Artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, Lee Krasner, Mark Rothko, Robert Motherwell and Joan Mitchell were exploring abstraction through spontaneity and process. The result can be seen as the dawn of Contemporary Art as we know it, effectively supplanting their European counterparts and establishing New York as the place to be for artists of the postwar period.
Renowned artists Francis Bacon and Frank Auerbach helped define and heighten painting in post-War Great Britain. Bacon's Study for Portrait and Auerbach's Head of Julia from The Gerald L. Lennard Foundation collects

The distorted dreamscape of Mark Tansey’s Transition Team (1997) is a mind-bending and enigmatic treatise on perception, rendered masterfully through variations on a single hue. Weaving together recognizable cultural images including Madonna, John F. Kennedy Jr., Princess Diana, Drew Barrymore and Kurt Cobain, the composition offers footholds into a familiar and concrete world, yet duplicating images permeate the canvas. The real folds into the imaginary and suggestions of meaning dissipate as the familiar becomes obscured and distorted.
“I’ve always hoped to put over things as directly and rawly as I possibly can” remarked Francis Bacon, and his haunting, visceral works remain the perfect embodiment of postwar existential angst. In this episode of Masterworks, discover the artist’s obsessions, inspirations, and method through excerpts from his iconic interviews with British art critic and curator David Sylvester. Bacon’s words inform our understanding of sensational paintings like Study for a Head, the very best of six portrait heads completed by the artist in 1952. This extraordinary work conveys Francis Bacon’s most celebrated and recognizable iconography and immediately presages his magnum opus – the Pope paintings produced in the following year. As such, this work occupies a critical position at a moment that would come to define Bacon as a master. Study for a Head will be offered as a highlight of Replica Shoes

Étude pour “Le Salon" is a study for two monumental canvasses of the same subject, both titled Le Salon, which can be found in the collects
ions of The Museum of Modern Art and The Minneapolis Institute of Art. Georgette, the thirteen-year-old daughter of the farmer at Champrovent, served as the model for both figures in this painting.
