Sotheby's American Art sale on 19 November features an impressive grouping of Hudson River School paintings, led by Frederic Edwin Church's South American Landscape. Influenced by Alexander von Humboldt's seminal publication Cosmos: A Sketch of a Physical Description of the Universe, Church sought to expose the American public to the wonders of the South American tropics and the spiritual qualities of the natural world. These intentions were squarely in line with the larger objectives of Hudson River School artists, as set forth by the movement's progenitor Thomas Cole. South American Landscape is a hallmark of Church's most triumphant naturalistic paintings. Here, the artist's exacting scientific detail serves as a visual documentary of Church's own awesome regard for the diverse environments of the American continents.

Carved out of dried cottonwood roots by initiated Hopi men, kachina figures – called tithu in the Hopi language – represent the different spirits that lie at the foundation of Hopi theology. These spirits, also called kachinas, act as intermediaries between the supernatural and material worlds and possess the power to bring rain to the parched desert landscape and to protect the overall well-being of Hopi villages. From December to July of each year, the Hopi believed that kachina spirits mingled among the living and held dance ceremonies during which men wearing colorful cost.mes
s embodied kachinas. The figures were presented to girls and young women as instruments of protection as well as guides for proper behavior. Far from being treated as 'dolls' in the Western sense, kachina figures were displayed in Hopi homes out of reverence for the spirits and as mnemonic tools.

In 1948, Joseph Cornell made his West Coast debut at visionary collects
or William Copley’s eponymous Beverly Hills gallery. The exhibition – an iconoclastic installation draped in royal blue velvet and featuring four works from the artist’s enigmatic Soap Bubble series – was, as Copley recalled, “quite beautiful and publicly disastrous as it proved forbidding and claustrophobic to anyone not already drunk on Cornell.” (William N. Copley, Reflections on a Past Life, Cologne, 2014, n.p.) Nevertheless, Soap Bubble Set attracted appropriately discerning buyers: Françoise Stravinsky, the daughter-in-law of famed composer Igor Stravinsky, and Copley’s gallery manager and her husband Soulima. Françoise and Soulima – himself a composer and concert pianist – were immersed in the West Coast avant-garde, counting Man Ray, Max Ernst, Dorothea Tanning and Aldous Huxley among their friends. The intricately composed Soap Bubble Set, a canonical centerpiece of Cornell’s oeuvre, has remained in the Stravinsky family for seventy years.
