Auction ResultsvideoSotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Auction on Tuesday night totalled £93.2 million ($122.8 million). Here, head of the sale, Emma Baker, explains how thirteen works by female artists were offered, the highest proportion offered in an evening sale. A highlight was Jenny Saville’s towering three-metre ‘Juncture’ from 1994, which achieved £5.7 million ($7.5 million), more than a 1000% increase on the £457,250 the painting achieved in its last appearance at auction in 2009. Auction records were set for Turner Prize-nominee Rebecca Warren and acclaimed Nigerian artist Toyin Ojih Odutola. Strong results were also achieved for works by Agnes Martin, Bridget Riley, Louise Bourgeois and Cindy Sherman.

The Steinberg collects ion represents one of the great private curatorial achievements of the past half century, informed by rare intelligence, dedicated research and a meticulous eye. In this First Look, preview works that represent the vast sphere of artistic innovation that took place across the United States and Canada in the post-war decades, from Abstract Expressionism to the Hard Edge and Minimalist movements. In addition to important works by Agnes Martin, Mark Rothko, Helen Frankenthaler and other Contemporary artists, the Steinberg collects ion contains an extraordinary selection of pieces by Impressionist & Modern icons, including Albert Giacometti, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso. The collects ion is led by two captivating paintings by Mark Rothko, Untitled (Red and Burgundy Over Blue) and Untitled (Red on Red), both executed in the final year of his life.
