CLOUD NINE 2 in 1 Contouring Iron Pro Review

It promises to straighten and curl your hair perfectly, but does it?

If you’re looking for an honest review of CLOUD NINE’s new 2-in-1 Contouring Iron Pro, you’ve come to the right place. I was lucky enough to get my hands on the innovative new hairstyling tool, which features one-of-a-kind curved plates that allow you to both straighten and curl your hair perfectly, and I’m sharing my thoughts on whether the £299 tool is worth it. But first, let me tell you a little bit about CLOUD NINE, what the new tool does, if it actually works and where you can get it.

It’s fair to say that convenience culture has taken over. We want everything quickly, whether it’s food, that new ASOS dress or our dinner. Everything has to be good quality, quick and if possible, effortless. So when it comes to our hair, we don’t want a whole host of different tools, like curlers, wavers and hair straighteners who has the space?! That’s exactly what CLOUD NINE are attempting to solve with the 2-in-1 Contouring Iron Pro, a tool that’s said to both curl and straightens your hair with equal proficiency. It has curved plates which help to achieve smooth locks, as well as a whole host of exciting features for the perfect finish.

About CLOUD NINE

If you’re yet to try any of CLOUD NINE’s products, you’re in for a treat. The company was founded in 2009 by Robert Powls, the man behind GHD so it’s safe to say he knows a thing or two about hair styling tools. All of their products are made in South Korea, as according to CLOUD NINE, it’s the only place in the world with the mineral Sericite the very same mineral that is infused into their products, including the new tool. The company’s products are on the pricey side, but the higher cost comes with the promise of being kind to your hair and thus keeping it in better condition, so it’s a worthy investment.

Is CLOUD NINE better than GHD?

Former hairdresser Robert Powls founded GHD, before later jumping ship and launching CLOUD NINE three years later. As a result, their offerings are quite similar but CLOUD NINE’s styling tools come with Sericite in the ceramic coating. This works to seal the hair cuticle and leave it soft, shiny and hydrated.

CLOUD NINE also offers a high temperature as their straighteners go up to 200ºC, while GHDs reach a maximum temperature of 185ºC, and they’re much lighter than GHDs to hold.

If price is the most important thing for you, GHDs might sway you. At the time of writing, a pair of GHDs retail at £129, while CLOUD NINE straighteners come in at £199.

It depends what’s most important to you, but I personally love the mineral benefits as I have thick hair, a higher temperature is beneficial to ensuring I get a lasting result.

Worried about the condition of your hair? The 2-in-1 Contouring Iron Pro has mineral infused plates that lock in moisture and give your hair shine, as well as Axial Vibration technology to avoid friction and prevent breakage. You can also change the temperature, so there’s no need to add too much heat to your hair if you don’t need to, and these automatically switch off after 30 minutes of inactivity.

So Cloud Nine’s new tool can talk the talk, but can it walk the walk? Keep reading to find out. Next, read about the best Zara perfumes that are said to be dupes for designer fragrances and how to recycle your old hair tools.

I’ll start by giving you a little bit of context about my hair. As someone who prefers a low maintenance hair routine and wants to keep my hair in tip top condition, I generally avoid adding heat to my hair. I only use a hairdryer on my fringe occasionally, then I use salt spray to give my waves definition. But as you can see (above), my hair also has a tendency to frizz when brushed out, so I jumped at the chance of trying out an alternative.

If you’re spending nearly £300 on an item, you want it to feel luxurious and this product really does. It comes in a beautiful matt box, and inside you’ll find a royal blue velvet style case and a protective guard alongside the tool itself. On a practical note, every CLOUD NINE product has a year-long guarantee, which can be extended to three years if you register it within 14 days of purchase.

The tool itself is royal blue and has a beautiful metallic sheen. Perhaps one of its best features is the option to adjust the heat of the tool, something that GHD notably doesn’t offer. You can also turn your tool into ‘Revive Mode’ to avoid breakage with Axial Vibration™ technology. To activate it, you just tap the power button again after initially switching it on and your temperature will automatically set to 150°C. The plates will vibrate at maximum frequency to feed your hair between them with minimum friction.

I’m not a big fan of my hair straight, so I decided to use mine to add some wave to my hair. I’ve used a number of straighteners to do this in my time and often you can almost feel your hair getting dried and damaged as you use them, but the CLOUD NINE tool is by far the smoothest tool I’ve ever used on my locks. It’s almost hard to go wrong too, as the curved plates avoid that overheated, almost straightened look to your waves. I found it super easy to use, and while my hair has a natural wave, it definitely defined my curls without too much effort.

For those who always worry they’ve left their straighteners on after they’ve left the house, this tool automatically turns off after 30 minutes of inactivity. This is almost vital to me, as I’ve spent wayyy to much time worrying at work about my house burning down!

My final thoughts: if you’re looking for a tool that does it all, I recommend the 2-in-1 Contouring Iron Pro. If you’re someone who rarely uses tools on their hair it’s a big investment to make, but if you like to switch it up it’s worth spending more on a product that works. It’s safe to say that CLOUD NINE know what they’re doing when it comes to haircare, so these won’t damage your hair like other heated tools and they create fantastic results.
