Sindiso Khumalo x Other Stories: Release Date Pictures

It’s not just H&M that collaborates with a long list of incredible designers. Following their collabs with names like A.W.A.K.E. MODE, Rejina Pyo and Minjukim, Other Stories has teamed up with South African designer Sindiso Khumalo on a new collection that landed today.

If you’re not familiar with Khumalo, let me introduce you. The Cape Town-based designer is making waves in the fashion world, so much so that in 2020, she was announced as one of the joint winners of the prestigious LVMH Prize, which recognises and supports emerging fashion designers.

After graduating from from Central St Martins, Khumalo launched her fashion brand in 2015. Her designs are inspired by the African diaspora, with previous collections celebrating the life of American slave abolitionist Harriet Tubman and Zulu wedding rituals.

Speaking about the collection she created alongside Other Stories, Khumalo says: “As an African designer, what truly matters to me is to design clothing that can highlight my African heritage and history and bring it to light in a contemporary setting. I like to bring cultural elements that represent who I am into textiles. They become visual vignettes that frame the collections.

”My hopes and wishes for this co-lab are to shine a light on African design and the magical nature of our enigmatic continent. And to communicate the importance of the materials when building your wardrobe. Collaborating with Other Stories provides a fantastic platform and new opportunities to speak to a bigger audience about our work.”

Sustainability is also important to the designer, and she adds: “The starting point for the co-lab collection was the materials themselves and ensuring they were sourced in a more sustainable way. It is essential for me to use more sustainable materials and to create garments that are going to be long-lasting.

“We want to open up a sustainability conversation with more people.”

The summery collection showcases the designer’s bold, bright, and feminine aesthetic. True to her heritage, storytelling is at the heart of her creations, adding depth and meaning to every piece.

The 17-piece limited collection, which Khumalo and Stories’ design team started working on in September 2021, includes colourful separates, an abstract swimsuit and matching sarong, loose-fitting dresses with exaggerated collars, puff sleeves and colour pop ruffles. It’s safe to say these will be the perfect holiday accompaniment as we slip into the spring summer seasons.
