There’s a reason why French fashion is arguably the best in the world.

Classic, chic and effortless, it manages never to look too fussy, but still put together. Just look at modern-day French style icons like Audrey Tautou, Isabel Marant and Clémence Poésy and you’ll see exactly what I mean.

My fascination for French girl style arose a long time ago, and I’ve avoided wearing berets at risk of looking too cliché.

This winter however, I’ve been swayed by Ganni’s glorious crochet and knitted berets.

Knitted berets are a playful take on the iconic French accessory, making for the perfect cold weather accessory for any look. Anything that combines keeping warm with looking stylish is a win in my eyes.

They come amid the rise of crochet everything. This summer, it was crop tops, bags and dresses, but if you’re not ready to pack away your crochet pieces, you’ll be glad to know that it’s taking over headwear too.

Such textures are also becoming increasingly popular with fashion designers like Prada, which uses the needlework technique as an alternative to traditional materials like leather and fur.

This season, I’ve started noticing it on the high street too. Monki, ASOS, Zara and more of our favourite affordable brands have dropped cosy berets.
