This simple rule is the key to making clashing prints look effortless
It just works.
If you’ve ever tried your hand at mixing prints, only to look like you’ve just stepped out of your childhood dressing up box, you’ll know how difficult it can be to get it right.
We’re endlessly seeing cool fashion girls showing us how it’s done and seeing perfectly mismatched looks on the catwalk, but when it comes to doing it ourselves, it’s a minefield.
However there’s one simple trick to clashing your prints that makes it so much easier to get right.

TikTok star Eve Lily hit the nail on the head with a recent video, which explains the rule so well we had to share it with you.
The stylist explains that to clash prints effortlessly, you need to identify one print as a staple and the other as a statement. So for example, staple prints could be polka dots, stripes or ditsy florals, while statement pieces will be the more garish prints, such as 70s patterns, graphic florals or wavey prints.
Team these patterns together and they’ll complement each other nicely, but if you pair two statement prints, the look can appear a little too much. Having said that, we do encourage you to wear whatever makes you feel confident and comfortable, whatever that might be.
To break up the prints, add accessories such as chunky waist belts, or throw on a sweater vest or corset to simplify the look.
As well as Eve Lily, there are plenty of influencers who have adopted the same rule when it comes to pattern clashing. Here are some of our favourite looks for outfit inspiration.
