If you’ve just run out of Yves Saint Laurent’s Black Opium and can’t bring yourself to splash out on another bottle, you’ll be glad to know that there a number of fantastic dupes for the iconic designer fragrance that cost a fraction of the price. After doing a deep-dive on the best Tom Ford perfume dupes, I started researching cheap scents that smell like YSL and was pleasantly surprised to find a wide variety of options from just £10. Yes, really.

The original fragrance launched in 2014 after being created by perfumers Nathalie Lorson, Marie Salamagne, Olivier Cresp and Honorine Blanc for YSL. It remains one of the designer’s most iconic and popular perfumes thanks to its contrasting notes of black coffee, vanilla and florals.

As designer scents go, it’s actually not that expensive. LookFantastic is currently selling a 30ml bottle of the opulent fragrance for £52, while 150ml will set you back £124. When you compare this to Kilian or Tom Ford’s luxurious perfumes, which cost over £200 for 50ml, Black Opium seems pretty affordable. That said, the cost of living in rising to unprecedented levels so if you can save some money on your beauty products and find a cheaper alternative to your every day perfume, why wouldn’t you?

ALDI dropped an insanely good dupe for Black Opium with Lacura’s Dark Blossom last year. While this is no longer available from ALDI, it’s still shoppable on reselling sites like eBay for a good price. And very soon, ALDI will be releasing a whole new batch of designer dupes for some of your favourite other luxury fragrances too.

Noted Aromas offers a number of designer fragrance dupes for pretty much every perfume worth knowing, including Black Opium. This scent has notes that are almost identical to the original. Plus, their scents are vegan and cruelty-free too and you can get 3 50ml bottles for £49.99.

Eden Perfumes is another well-known dupe shop and unsurprisingly, they have a great scent that smells like Black Opium. Don’t be put off by the mis-spelling on the box; this scent is one of the best-rated YSL dupes out there. Shipping is free for orders over £40, so you might want to get a couple!

The Dupe: M&S Midnight Blossom Eau De Toilette

M&S offers the cheapest alternative to Black Opium with Midnight Blossom, which is a snip at just £10 for 100ml. It has notes of sweet jasmine, mandarin, amber and tuberose, which create a similar scent to the original. Zara’s Gardenia is probably my favourite dupe for Black Opium. This fragrance has notes of orange blossom, coffee, peach and raspberry, creating a fruity and floral fragrance that’s a dead-ringer for the original. Many of the high street brand’s best scents sell out pretty quickly, so it’s worth stocking up too.
